A minor item from the Appearance Fee Open Omega Dubai Desert Classic that made me smile. From Alistair Tait's Five Things:
Seve Ballesteros, who died in 2011, was the only former winner missing from an 18-hole past-champions tournament before the Dubai event. However, tournament organizers allowed Seve's son Javier to play in his place.
He was even paired with Seve’s former Ryder Cup partner, fellow Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal.
Like father, like son as Javier opened with a hooked tee shot and had to lay up 50 yards short of the green. Like Seve, though, he made a pitch-and-putt par.
One of the great regrets of my bride is that she took to golf too late to appreciate Seve. True that, though he could be maddening as well. Just ask Paul Azinger or anyone who ran into him in a Ryder Cup.
This is the best compilation I could find on YouTube. It's not great, but I like that it includes both high points and low, a necessary part of appreciating Seve. And it concludes with the appropriate image, the exultation on the 18th green of the Old Course as he secured the 1984 Open Championship over Tom Watson.
Speaking of Seve's misses, it's little remembered that he opened the door for Jack's improbable 6th Masters in 1986, by rinsing balls on both 13 and 15. He had things well in hand at the time, but that was Seve.
