The Secret Lives of Golfers

Oh, what a tangled web we weave
When first we practise to deceive! - Marmion

A couple of tales today about that most dangerous of human failings.... well, perhaps I shouldn't indict all of mankind, just the...errrr...man kind.

Oh Tiger, Say It Isn't So - Like me, were you a little curious about the timing of the Tiger-Lindsey split, coming so soon after that warm family outing at The Masters Par-3 Contest?  Well, you can thank Employee No. 2 for this item, as she is far more focused in her consumption of the Post's Page Six than your humble blogger.

The Daily Mail broke this story, and I was unaware of it because the golf press has ignored it completely:
Daily Mail Online can now exclusively reveal that during one of those 'times apart' Tiger
cheated on Lindsey - with a 'faceless, nameless woman', a friend reveals.
'He had a relapse in the sex department,' a close friend reveals to Daily Mail Online. 'Lindsey found out about women again. Always while he's on the road. Just like when he was with Elin.'
It was after Tiger was eliminated from the San Diego-based Farmers Insurance Open in February, somewhere near his old stomping grounds in Southern California, that Tiger had a one night stand, the friend divulged.
OK, did she really not have a face, because I'm worried that Maggot won't be able to focus on his packing.

But you'll recall that Torrey was where Tiger's glutes famously failed to fire, so I'm glad to see that the glutes don't prevent other body parts from firing....<rim shot>.  I'll be here all week folks, please remember to tip your waitress.

Now that "friend" had more to say.... and in attempting to defend the indefensible it only sounds worse:
'He withdrew from Farmers. You have to understand, while it's not right, it's not really wrong either. Tiger isn't married. He doesn't really drink or do drugs. So what else does he have when he can't afford to lose again? He is allowed to find some relief.
'Most men would drink over such losses.Tiger has sex over it. Usually with local hookers whom he pays exorbitant amounts to, probably so they will want repeat business and won't tell.'
Michelle Braun, a former Hollywood madame revealed that between 2006 and 2007 Tiger paid upwards of $40,000 for six 'pay-for-sex dates.'
I do hope that Tiger didn't try the "It's not really wrong" bit with Lindsey, as she would be far more formidable with a 9-iron than Elin.... And the hooker story seems kind of a stretch, as he's so famously cheap.
'When Tiger realized he was seen, he became concerned and eventually he decided to confess to Lindsey. Something he didn't do with Elin. He came clean and I give him credit for that.
'Yes, Tiger cheated again. But it wasn't with anyone special. He really wanted Lindsey to be the one. But he blew it again. He can't help himself. He's got an addiction. He relapsed,' says the friend.
'Knowing Tiger, he doesn't even see it as cheating because there's no romance or feeling there. It's just a stress reliever, like a high-ball or two after a bad day.'
The friend tells Daily Mail Online that despite pleas from peers and relatives to keep going to his self-mandated therapy sessions, Tiger stopped going completely -- leading to the alleged 'one-time slip'.
Any chance the friend is George Costanza?  Now this bit does sound believable, given the lives that they lead, but it's pretty deep into the story:
Cheating wasn't Lindsey's only problem with Tiger.
'She always flew in to be by his side, but he rarely flew to be by her side. A relationship goes both ways. Not just Tiger's way.

'She started to see how Tiger's really obsessed with himself, his game, making money, controlling everything around him. The girlfriend takes a back seat. Only golf is front and center.'
He made a couple of high profile visits to her ski races....if fact, how did the Daily Mail miss this, but perhaps it was Lindsey that knocked his tooth out?  There's lots of detail there for those that are interested, and I should also reiterate that this, by the paper's own admission, is based on a single source.

But still, this might be the unkindest cut:
The source explained that Tiger's transgressions and self obsessions were two problems Lindsey had with Tiger. There was a third.

'She thought he was a bit of a bore. She's right. He's sometimes very boring to be around. He's got nothing going on in his head sometimes, besides himself.
Our Daly Bread - From Tiger we move to another upstanding member of the community, John Daly.  John has found happiness with his current fiancee Anna Cladakis, who has also been caddying for him.  JD tweeted the happy news back in December:

Tonite I asked my best friend, soul mate & no one better to marry me & she said yes!

So it's hard to see anything but blue skies and clear sailing for this happy couple, and I'm guessing she doesn't even need to be all that good at her day job.  So who would be cruel enough to speak now in lieu of holding the peace?  Have you ever heard the term Alienation of Affection?  Yup, we're going to court...heck, we may be going to the SUPREME Court:
JACKSON, Miss. — The fiancee of professional golfer John Daly is asking the US Supreme Court to throw out a lawsuit that blames her for breaking up his previous marriage.
In February, the Mississippi Supreme Court gave the green light to Sherrie Allison Miller to pursue damages against Anna Cladakis, claiming alienation of affection.
Miller and Daly married in 2001 and separated in 2007. She is suing Cladakis, to whom Daly became engaged in December, for unspecified damages, arguing that Cladakis broke up their marriage.
It's sort of a tortious interference claim for the philandering set, but there are only a few states that have such a statute on the books.  Hence, in order to make the claim stick, Miller would need to prove that the actionable actions actually took place in Mississippi.... We may want to avert our gaze during discovery.

Now in this case I do think the claim should be barred, but for reasons having more to do with a statute of limitations, though not one demarcated in increments of time.  Ms. Miller was not the first Mrs. Daly, not by a long stretch....in fact, she was the fourth.  I'm not sure exactly where the line should be drawn, but when you're the fourth wife it should be presumed that the affection is borrowed, not owned.
