I've just finished catching up on the last groups via Tivo, and I've no words for the display that Rory showed us...though there's a strong and fairly interesting chase pack, so lots of golf yest to be played. And weather yet to endure...
Former Conventional Wisdom: Rory can't handle Fridays....
New Conventional Wisdom: Rory can't handle weather.
Stay tuned to see if the latter proves true.... But quite the wow, and ever the showman he even teased us with a first-hole bogey. The good news for Rors is that if he survives tomorrow's weather, Sunday shapes up as a day he can play in.
Former Conventional Wisdom: DJ is a flatliner that doesn't feel pressure.
New Conventional Wisdom: How do you think he'll kick this one away?
Though when Paulina provides the shoulder upon which you cry, little actual sympathy will result.
Former Conventional Wisdom: Good memories of '06 will have Tiger in the mix on Sunday.
New Conventional Wisdom: Did he bring an alarm clock?
He's gonna have a seriously early tee-time tomorrow. Do they use markers at the Open? That was quite the display of ....errr.....rust (how's that for meeting my charitable adjective quota?) he showed us on No. 17...
Former Conventional Wisdom: Bubba is made for links golf.
New Conventional Wisdom: Bubba doesn't do weekends much anymore.
Former Conventional Wisdom: If it were held today, Joost Luiten would be on the Euro Ryder Cup team.
New Conventional Wisdom: 81-76.
Exit Quiz: What do the aforementioned Luiten, Peter Uhlein, Chris Stroud, Russell Henley, Roberto
Castro, Brendan Steele, Webb Simpson, Richard Sterne, Ernie Els, Pablo Larrazabal, Jamie Donaldson, JB Holmes, Gonzalo Fernandez-Ctanano, Jonas Blixt, Top-5 Patrick Reed and Scott Stallings have in common?
Answer: They got their butts kicked by factory worker John Singleton, who qualified with borrowed wedges. Singleton shot a two-under 70 today (think Tiger could have used that kind of round?), and piping his opening tee shot might have been the high point of this Open.
Forecast for Saturday: Well first and foremost, I might watch....though it'll be on Tivo.
Per the AP: The forecast calls for deteriorating weather to begin overnight Friday, with an expected break of up to four hours late Saturday morning.
Based on that, they're going to play in threesomes off of split tees with groups starting on each tee at 9:00 a.m. local time. I believe this is the first time they've used split tees in an Open Championship, and Rory will play with DJ and Francesco Molinari at 11:01. For reasons I don't quite get and contra my note above, Tiger is also at 11:01 off the tenth tee, with Jordan Spieth and Australian Rhein Gibson.
